Believe it or not, our parents were once kids. We all know that ...though we often don't conceptualize that with our attempts at understanding. And our parents have experiences that are often invaluable, if we just take the time to listen to them.
Dad did walk to school. I don't know if it was five miles ...it was around four or five miles. He had to walk up two rather large hills ...but it wasn't against the wind both ways.
I don't know the exact age, but Dad was around eight years old ...some relatives said he was six years old, anyway, it was an age that was imaginably young by today's standards. At that time, dad's dad got double-pneumonia. My dad was the oldest boy, so he had to hitch up the horses to the plow and work the fields.
A couple of generations before that, the family came from Europe.
A young boy, about eight years old, was to take a boat over to America ...to meet relatives. But, the relatives could not be found, so he made himself an indentured servant. Many of the first slaves in America started as indentured servants, but when the person's time was up, the servant was not freed. But, contrary to common belief, both people were of the same race. I see the dreaded Civil War was fought over ideas and beliefs that brought about much hostilities. The view that Abraham Lincoln fought for ...is also much like what I adhere to. Yet, politics is not always honest. Where do we place the blame, and who do we sympathize with?
Many of the youth of today want right now ...what their parents worked an entire life for. When we covet things ...responsibility often goes out the window when distracted by self-attaining ambitions. Credit often then gets involved ...getting things we can't attain at the moment. And during some difficult moments, the credit often can't be settled.
The 'Golden Rule' doesn't even seem to register when we get even more absorbed with self. There is little room for others when filled with self.
There are many decent and caring young people, yet if the majority of them are not taught responsible standards, how can they then impress upon others the proper character?
What will become of us if the future is dictated by less than responsible standards. I care about the youth, and especially have a heart for decent caring individuals who think of others instead of solely about self.
